Root-applied glycinebetaine decreases nitrate accumulation and improves quality in hydroponically grown lettuce

چکیده
Leafy vegetables like lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) naturally have high nitrate content and the European Commission has set maximum level for in lettuce. Glycinebetaine is an organic osmolyte alleviating plant stress, but its role leaf accumulation remains unknown. The uptake of glycinebetaine by roots, potential to regulate improve quality were investigated. Two hydroponic experiments conducted with different application rates (Exp1: 0, 1, 7.5, 15 mM; Exp2: 1 + 10, 4 mM). Plants analyzed at varying time points. Root resulted translocation leaves. concentrations > 7.5 mM reduced up 40% increased dry matter content. showed a positive effect on mineral amino acid composition. Thus, could be novel strategy reduce

Possible Internalization of an Enterovirus in Hydroponically Grown Lettuce
Several studies have shown that enteric viruses can be transferred onto the surface of vegetables and fruits through spray irrigation, but, recently, reports have suggested viral contamination of vegetables sub-irrigated with reused wastewater. Hydroponic cultures, used to grow ready to eat fresh lettuce, have also been used to study the possibility of viral absorption through roots. This study...
متن کاملSubstitution of inorganic fertilizers with organic manure reduces nitrate accumulation and improves quality of purslane
Growers often apply high amounts of chemical fertilizers for vegetable production and this application contributes to concerns about nitrate levels in food. An experiment was conducted to investigate soil N amendment effects for reducing the nitrate accumulation and improving the quality of fresh purslane (Portulaca ...
متن کاملInternalization and dissemination of human norovirus and animal caliciviruses in hydroponically grown romaine lettuce.
Fresh produce is a major vehicle for the transmission of human norovirus (NoV) because it is easily contaminated during both pre- and postharvest stages. However, the ecology of human NoV in fresh produce is poorly understood. In this study, we determined whether human NoV and its surrogates can be internalized via roots and disseminated to edible portions of the plant. The roots of romaine let...

متن کاملTomato chlorotic spot virus in Hydroponically-Grown Lettuce in São Paulo State, Brazil
In the regions of Campinas and Sumaré, São Paulo, Brazil, hidroponically grown crops of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cv. Verônica, which showed virus-like symptoms were examined by electron microscope, biological, serological and molecular tests. Pleomorphic, enveloped particles (80-100 nm in diameter) were always detected in these samples. Experimentally inoculated host plants, including lettuce, ...
